What is Yachay?
A planned city for technological innovation and knowledge intensive businesses combining the best ideas, human talent and state-of-the-art infrastructure, which shall create the worldwide scientific applications necessary to achieve Good Living (Buen Vivir).
Within the city the first University of Experimental Technological Research shall be implemented and it shall be linked to public and private research institutes, technology transfer centers, high technology companies and the agricultural and agro industrial communities of Ecuador, in this way comprising the first Latin American hub of knowledge.
YACHAY, Word meaning knowledge in Quechua
The Yachay City of Knowledge is built in the San Miguel de Urcuquí canton, a valley surrounded by hills and mountains, located to the Northwest of the Imbabura province, in the North of Ecuador, in an area of 4,489 hectares.
Yachay has a privileged location and connections being situated 115 km from the new international airport at Quito, approximately an hour and half away, with the facilities presented by the expansion of the road network; also, Ibarra, a populated center of national importance, is a mere 15 minutes from the canton and has good connections to the North of the country, on the border with Colombia.
The “YACHAY” City of Knowledge is built in the San Miguel de Urcuquí canton, this place was chosen after an exhaustive technical analysis which identified various conditions such as climate, terrain, connectivity, availability of water, amongst others, must-haves for the installation of the infrastructure and necessary factors for research and production centers.
Open Space: At least 2000 acres of open space are needed for the orderly execution of a project of this nature, The Yachay City of Knowledge will occupy 4,489 hectares.
Flat Areas: There are important expanses of flat land, due to which agricultural and industrial production processes, as well as research that requires this type of area, are guaranteed.
Accessibility: With the expansion of the road network, The Yachay City of Knowledge, has an average connection time of 1.5 hours to the new international airport of Quito; 15 minutes to the city of Ibarra and 2 hours to the port of Esmeraldas.
Average Cost: In addition to the low land prices that San Miguel de Urcuquí offers, the management of Yachay EP [Yachay Public Company] shall provide the inhabitants of the City of Knowledge with a wide range of excellent quality products at affordable prices.
Water Supply: In addition to the flow of water that is provided by current sources: Alofitara, Manavalchaca, Pinllohuerta and San Miguel there is the Multiporpósito Pinan-Tumbab iro project being led and administered by the National Secretary of Water – SENAGUA, which will contribute 6000 litres/sec., to Cotacachi, Atuntaqui, Urcuquí and Yachay, for agricultural development, human consumption and hydroelectric generation.
Temperate Climate: The stable climate of the area (14° C and 22° C) and the humidity, favor the production / industrial processes and the research being undertaken in Yachay.
Low Vulnerability: The project area is one of low vulnerability as it does not feature any geological faults or risk of floods.

They have human talent, infrastructure support and technological heritage, public and private services, and financial instruments, which facilitate basic and applied research, experimental development, transfer and manufacturing technology, and innovation.
These cities aim to develop social skills in order to increase the national technological base, strengthen the social economy of knowledge and promote the development of science.
In these areas of national and / or regional impact, the shared flow of knowledge and technology between institutions of higher education and research institutions, production units and the city markets is stimulated and managed.
The cities of knowledge comprise autonomous administrative and financial organizations within Ecuadorian territory. The operation is similar to the special territorial regimes that ensure infrastructure, operation and proper management of these cities.
