A historical presentation of two new Ecuadorian postage stamps containing heritage sites of Yachay, City of Knowledge, was performed in the heritage campus of Yachay Tech in Urcuquí.
The commemorative stamps illustrate two heritage sites at Yachay: The Yachay Tech Main Hall site where today scientific events are held. The Main Hall was formerly the chapel of the Hacienda San José; and Yachay Tech Heritage Library, which in the past was the sugar mill of the Hacienda.
The purpose of the issue of the stamps is to show the world the transformation in the area of higher education that Ecuador has undertaken. The stamps commemorate the emergence of the City of Knowledge as the cornerstone for the change in the production matrix driven by the national government. They are 3.8 x 2.8 cm, have a circulation of 70,000 copies and a value of USD 2.00.
For the surrogategeneral manager of Yachay Public Company, Fernando Cornejo, this is a symbolic act in which the Ecuadorian State through the Ecuadorian Postal Company recognizes Yachay as a flagship project.
“The Ecuadorian society must recognize that our country is a producer of knowledge and that becomes a benchmark not only in tourism and culture, but also in science and technology,” he said.
For the general manager of the Ecuadorian Postal Company, Ricardo José Quiroga, stamps with images of Yachay help to show the nation’s largest public company and the project that will re-write history in the region.
Fernando Albericio, chancellor at Yachay Tech University, stressed the significance of this, as it becomes a bridge between the university and society. He further emphasized the importance of electing two Yachay Tech historic sites for postage.
The issue of two stamps by Yachay City was authorized by the Philatelic Council of the Ecuadorian Postal Company. From now on, Yachay stamps are part of the inventory of cultural heritage assets of Ecuador.
