More than 5,000 students from public, “fiscomisional” [a state-funded religious school], municipal and private schools arrived where the event occurred at La Avenida 24 de Mayo, to participate in the 6km run “Let’s run for Education” organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Yachay Public Company.
The award ceremony was attended by Augusto Espinosa, Minister of Education; Francisca Herdoiza, Secretary of Education of the Metropolitan District of Quito; and Fernando Cornejo, Technical Manager of Yachay Public Company.
Students enjoyed the presence of a special guest, Jefferson Pérez, who welcomed the students in the program awards at the Cruz del Papa, and shared a motivational talk including several anecdotes with young people, parents and the general public.
“We need to develop our natural qualities but also the intellectual, by studying (…) We have sold bananas many times, oil many times and raw materials for the world, now is the time to transform our lives (…),” said Perez, who finished speaking by advising young people to learn the wisdom of their parents as well as academic knowledge.
“I want to thank Yachay, which is the symbol of the new Ecuador. All of you carry the Yachay name on the back of your shirts, an institution that knows the importance of sport and has sponsored this event,” said Augusto Espinosa.
In the women’s category, the winners were: First place, Colegio de América; Second place, Colegio Simón Bolívar; and third place, Colegio Julio Donoso.
In the men’s category, the winners were: First place, Colegio Manuela Cañizares; second place Cardinal de la Torre; and third place, San José de Minas.
“Because knowledge and sport add more, because you know that he who studies and exercises develops greater capacity to generate more brain cells. Yachay is a company created to generate more knowledge for the country, “said Fernando Cornejo.
“For me it is a new experience, I love sport. My participation in this race is a major inspiration, I did it for my father and my family,” said Ines Guanotuña, student at Colegio Fiscal 15 de Diciembre. Meanwhile, Silvana Salcedo, a teacher at Colegio Nacional Arturo Borja said “We participate in these initiatives because through sport we can develop integral part of the whole human being.”
